How To Tell Real Agarwood From Fake

What is agarwood?
Agarwood (also called “trầm hương” in Vietnamese, or oud in Arabic) is the fungus-infused heartwood of the Aquilaria tree, which slowly accumulates aromatic resin over time. When the tree is injured — by insects, fungi, or physical impact — it secretes resin to heal itself. Over decades, this resin hardens into agarwood.
This process is entirely natural and cannot be rushed. A high-quality piece of agarwood typically takes 30-50 years to form. The rarest grade — kỳ nam — can take a full century.
Why is agarwood so expensive?
Three reasons: (1) the formation takes an extraordinarily long time, (2) only about 1% of mature Aquilaria trees actually produce agarwood, (3) natural sources have become increasingly scarce due to overharvesting. These factors keep real agarwood permanently valuable — and they’re also why fakes are so widespread.
Agarwood grades by quality
Our family classifies agarwood into 4 basic tiers:
- Trầm tốc (Standard) — entry level, lower resin content, affordable. Suitable for daily wear.
- Trầm VIP — richer resin content, visible veining, stronger fragrance. Our bestseller.
- Trầm chìm nước (Sinking) — dense enough to sink when dropped in water. Very high resin content, deep complex fragrance.
- Kỳ nam — the rarest grade, prized by collectors. Prices can reach tens of thousands of US dollars for a small piece.
5 ways to identify real agarwood
Here are simple tests you can do yourself — no specialized equipment required.
1. Resin veins are uneven and asymmetrical
Natural agarwood has randomly distributed resin. If you see veins that look too uniform, too pretty, too symmetrical — that’s a sign of pressed agarwood (ordinary wood with resin forced in by machine) or dyed wood.
2. The scent shifts with body heat
Hold real agarwood in your palm for about 30 seconds — your body heat slowly releases the fragrance. Fake agarwood (artificially scented) usually smells strong immediately, but doesn’t react to temperature and fades completely within days.
3. Weight matches the grade
Real agarwood with more resin weighs more. A 10mm sinking-grade bead can weigh twice as much as a standard-grade bead of the same size. Beads that feel unusually light are often dyed ordinary wood.
4. The water test
Drop a bead into a cup of water — sinking-grade (the premium tier) will sink. Standard grade will float partially. Fake agarwood often produces rising bubbles after a few minutes in water (as glue or paint dissolves).
5. The burn test
The final — and most reliable — test. Burn a small piece: real agarwood produces thin smoke, a sweet and delicate scent that lingers for a long time. Pressed or fake agarwood produces black smoke, a burnt smell, or a chemical odor.

No single test is 100% reliable — even experienced buyers use several methods together. The safest approach is still to buy from somewhere you can visit in person, inspect directly, and have a transparent return policy.
The most common types of fake agarwood
In today’s market, these are the 4 types of fake agarwood you’re most likely to encounter:
Oil-pressed agarwood
Ordinary wood (often pine or eucalyptus) is soaked in industrial agarwood oil under high pressure. It initially looks very similar to real agarwood — but the scent fades completely within 2-3 months of wear.
Dyed agarwood
Ordinary wood dyed black or dark brown to resemble agarwood’s resin veins. No real fragrance — only a faint chemical smell or no scent at all.
Composite agarwood
Agarwood powder mixed with glue and pressed into bead shapes. Looks similar from the outside, but a cross-section reveals the unnatural structure. Burning smells of glue.
“Mixed” strands
This is the most sophisticated — real agarwood mixed with 30-70% fake beads in the same strand. Inexperienced buyers are fooled because there are still real beads to smell.

How to care for agarwood so the fragrance lasts

Avoid contact with perfume, soap, chemicals
Alcohol-based perfumes and soaps will strip away agarwood’s natural oils. Remove your bracelet before bathing or applying perfume.
Wear it often
Contrary to what you might think — wearing agarwood often is better than setting it aside. Your natural skin oils polish the beads and help release the fragrance gradually.
Wipe gently with a dry cloth
Once a week, wipe the beads with a soft dry cloth. Don’t use water — it strips the surface oils.
Store in a dry, ventilated place
When not wearing, keep your agarwood in a wooden box or fabric pouch somewhere dry. Avoid direct sunlight and high humidity.
